Comfy Quilts/NICU quilts, 2008

My quilt guild, the Heritage Quilters of Huntsville, supply two organizations with quilts to give away. One is called "Comfy quilts" and goes to the Crisis Services to hand out to children in difficult circumstances. The other is to cover isolettes in the Huntsville Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for premature infants.

Nov 2008: Comfy #6, Skater
I though this upholstery/drapery fabric printed with skating equipment (on sale at Hancocks) would make a great teen quilt. The back is a nice Hawaiian fleece print. I have more of the skater fabric and will probably make some kind of strip or block quilt out of it next year.

Oct 2008: Comfy #5, Mauve
Mom and Betsy bought a big bag of scrap fabric from a thrift store in Ft.Walton Bch. When I visited them for the weekend I found some nice purples, blues, and mauves that I was able to put into this nice top in just a day or two.

Sept 2008: Comfy #4, Sneakers
I found this fabric last summer and made it into this pattern called "Magical Cubes" from just triangles and squares.

June 2008: Comfy #3, Rustic Zigzag
I cut and pieced most of this quilt at the Guild Quilt-a-thon in Feb.

May 2008: NICU #3, Rust & Blue
Originally this was a wall hanging for a friend, almost all hand quilted in blue, white, and gold thread. Unfortunately I could not get the chalk marks off. A dozen years later, I tried again with slightly better success. Some blocks still show a little blue or white chalk marks that scrubbing with a toothbrush and repeated washings did not remove. Some of the sashing was machine quilted with gold bobbin thread and clear top thread to emulate the previous hand quilting.

Apr 2008: Comfy #2, Monkey Business
Joann's in FWB had this nice Monkey Business border print. I cut it so the main part of the border surrounds a simple star, then used the remaining border at the top and bottom, after adding the applique corner blocks with stars and hearts.

Mar 2008: NICU #2, Moo Over Mountain
Inspired by this wonderful cow fabric, the moon-over-mountain pattern is one I'd done before in Julia Zimmerman's baby quilt. I got the border and backing fabric from our guild quilt-a-thon in Feb.

Feb 2008: Comfy #1, Alphabet Blocks
I used up the leftover fabric from Darby's baby quilt. Coral print back and binding is left over from a dress.

Jan 2008: NICU #1, Pastel Baby Blocks
I found this panel fabric, and combined it with various sized blocks to make a small quilt.
