Jungle Birds : Baby quilt for William Owen M., 2009-2010

Made for my new great-nephew William Owen-in-law, born Feb. 6, 2009.

I started with a great tropical bird print, and combined it with rectangles of other prints. The rectangular piecing pattern uses Judy Cicsneros's Rectangle Pizzaz book. Unlike many of my other quilts, this is one that cannot be planned out -- you just have to sew rectangles into block units, then see how they look when you lay them out.

The boundary between the inner border and the quilt is decorated with embroidered birds, flowers, palm fronds, and ferns, with some additional applique of birds from the main fabric. Owen's name and birthday are embroidered in the center top outer border; my name is at the bottom in the inner border; the quilt title is in the right outer border.

The inner portion was quilted in wavy diagonal lines in yellow-green; the outer borders were done in light blue echo quilting.
