Tippi's Triangles, Oct-Dec 2009

This paper-pieced and machine-quilted scrap quilt was inspired by Miriam Kujac's Oct. 2009 article in American Patchwork and Quilting which showed a 19th century quilt top made of triangle-diamonds pieced into stars against a double pink background. The article showed that the original quilt top had been made as a "charm" quilt -- that is, every triangle was a different fabric; the author said that they had been unable to find a name for this pattern.

The instructions in the magazing for reproducing the top provided templates for cutting and piecing triangles into diamonds and then into the stars. Straight pieced seemed too difficult for me, so I modified a paper piecing fabric, and I did not make this as a charm quilt; other than the double pink background print, all the fabrics were from my stash, and mostly scraps from other quilts. While finishing this quilt, my cat Tippi got very sick. She recovered, but I at the time I thought this might be the last quilt she "helped" me on.

The paper piecing pattern came from Marcia Hohn's Quilters Cache -- a pattern called Morning Stars. The backing fabric is a lightweight upholstery print, so the quilt is heavy.
