Cardinal Christmas Pillow Covers, Dec 2012 (in 2020 became quilted wall hanging)

I ordered a deep blue-green snow patterned fabric and made these pillow covers based on the "Midwinter Night" pattern in the magazine The Quilter (Holiday 2012). I made 4 large squares, each with a different arrangement of cardinals on tree branches. The background snow fabric was supposed to coordinate with my mother's white and navy living room. These birds had the smallest applique pieces I have yet worked with (all fusible applique). The pillow covers were finished with an envelope-style back.

After Mom passed away, I cut away the rounded corners, added sashing, and sewed the four blocks into a little wall hanging.
