Mom's Door Quilts : May Flowers, 2019

The fourth of the door decoration quilts for Mom at RV, this scrappy design was inspired by card sent by Aunt Patty. I learned about fusing (rather than sewing) fabrics together by taking classes and making quilts with Laura Wasilowski and Maggie Weiss and have since made a number of simple projects that used fused fabrics like 2010's Overcaffinated (Huntsville Quilt Guild fundraiser) and Falling Leaves; 2012's Peck of Pears (Huntsville Botanical Garden fundraiser), Chanticleer (Public radio fundraiser), and Watery Windows ; and 2013's Kitty Cocktails.

This is the most complicated fusible applique design that I have made.

As usual, most the fabric used in this quilt is from my stash. I did buy the gray and white "wood" fabric for the picket fence (used the reverse side of the fabric), and I bought a small amount of a floral fabric of the right scale for the butterflies and orange flowers. The embroidered birds were cut from the leftover slipcover fabric used on the big chair in the sunroom. The quilt back is fabric left from the added border of Mom's enlarged Flower Squares bed quilt, first made in 2004, then enlarged with new borders in 2009.
