Love Words : Valentine's Day quilt, March 2014

Wanting a Valentine's Day quilt to add to my collection of holiday-themed wall hangings, I used Tonya Ricucci's Word Play Quilts to create this wall hanging. The quote is from Walter Lippmann (American journalist, 1889-1974).

Instead of the free-form letters described in the book, I tried to use the Prairie style "Chelsea Studio" font. Starting with the easiest letters (T, H, E, I), the more difficult ones (A, Y, N, L, M), leaving the most difficult letters to the end (R, V, U, W, P, D, C, S, O). I finally gave up and fused the final group of letters, either wholly or in part. I was able to use all a different pink fabric for each of the words, and used a mixture of whites and creams for the background.

The backing fabric is a mix of a maroon and pink paisley rayon, and some of the remaining dark red curtain fabric. Quilted in white with a meander and hearts pattern, and bound with a red, pink, and white fan fabric.

Feb 2022 Update: donated this oversized wall hanging to the MP thrift store.
