When I heard that "Space" was the room-theme for the 3rd grandson, I knew I wouldn't have to buy much fabric since I'd collected space fabrics 10 years ago, thinking that it would make a great quilt for another friend's grandson.
I cut out each of the 15 images from a space fabric panel, then arranged them with various border fabrics, ending up keeping just the black or blue, sewing borders to each image (blue fabric around the mostly black images and black fabric around the mostly blue images). Then each space image was set alternatly with a paper pieced star block called "Starry Path," in cornflower blue, gold-speckled black and various yellows/golds fabrics.
At the last minute I added paper-pieced rockets in each border. The back is a multicolored space fabric combined with various blue and black star fabrics and additional images from the space panel.
