A Gilded Fan from a Fan of the Guild
Oct. 21, 2010

My stitch group, The Quilt Scrum, put together differnt baskets of fabric to donate to the quilt guild auction in October. We made a tea basket that had a variety of tea-themed fabrics, plus patchwork patterned teacups, a honey pot, and some actual boxes of tea. Another basket was coffee-themed, and another had Asian fabrics. To accompany the Asian basket and its 3 yards of assorted fabric, Japanese stencil book, fan, brocade purse, and a beautiful Japanese tea set, I made this little wall hanging.

It was made from adapting block 3340 in BlockBase ("Milady's Fan"), changing the pattern to be paper-pieced, adding embroidery, and finally embellishing with a pearl earring. This was a not-entirely successful attempt at an original design -- I meant the fan to have 9 blades, not 7; the ribbon should have been bigger; the whole thing wasn't quite square somehow -- maybe the heavy decorative stitches around the border messed it up?
